News of gold in Victoria reached the world. Gold fever around 1857 created gold rushes with the prospect of great fortunes to be made. Over 16,000 Chinese people landed at Robe direct from China, to travel overland to the goldfields 400km to the East. Landing at Robe avoided the ten pound landing tax in Victoria for inbound prospectors. Sourcing local supplied the treasure seekers set off on foot through the bus passing the 12 mile Vineyard location where they camped for their first night.
