A fine, coal powered steamship working the waters of Backstairs Passage, the SS Karatta carried passengers and cargo with a capacity for 2600 bags of wheat and 900 shorn sheep. For a time, SS Karatta was the lifeblood of Kangaroo Island. Built in Scotland in 1907, the SS Karatta was owned by the Adelaide Steamship Company (the family connection) and was named after Karatta House in Robe (the other family connection). Her life buoy sits in pride of place in the window of the Karatta Wine Room & Gallery in Robe.
